For those of you who are planning on taking photos during the Uncon, or just those who want to see photos taken by others, you may want to join the flickr group for the event that has been set up by our treasurer ardachy.

The group can also be used for other photos which relate to the Leeds Unconvention, whether they be raffle prizes you are planning to donate, items you are bringing to add to goodie bags, the suitcase you’ve packed (or left empty for books!) for your trip to Leeds, or whatever other Uncon related photos you may wish to share.

Useful Information

The local committee members, in particular Mai-day have put together the following useful information which could prove particularly handy for first time visitors to Leeds.

Google Map

Visit the Uncon Google map to get an overview of some of the key locations we will be visiting during the weekend. This includes the main venue, the Saturday night restaurants, bus and train stations, and Leeds City Library, as well as a selection of hotels, car parks, and shopping opportunities.

The Electric Press

The Carriageworks Theatre is in a complex called The Electric Press. As well as the theatre there are a number of bars and restaurants in the complex.  For more information visit the Electric Press website.

For those coming to Leeds by car here are a couple of car parks which are more reasonable than most:

Woodhouse Lane: This is a council run car park and is around 10 minute walk from the Carriageworks. Visit the car park website here.

  • Up to 2 hours £2
  • Up to 3 hours £3
  • Up to 4 hours £4
  • Up to 12 hours £5
  • Up to 14 hours £6
  • Up to 24 hours £10
  • Up to 48 hours £20

Leeds Station long stay car park: This is on the other side of the city centre, but still only about 10-15 minutes walk from the venue.  It is cheaper than Woodhouse Lane, but it really depends where people are staying as to which is most convenient for them

Night hours (18:00 to 06:00) £4.50.  Customers must arrive after 18:00 and leave before 06:00, Monday to Friday. Weekend overnight parking is included in the £4.50 per day tariff.

Saturday – full day or part there of £4.50.
Sunday – full day or part there of £4.50.

Open all the time
Open 24 hours a day – 7 days a week.

Saturday Evening Meals

Dinner by Dinner Series on flickr

Following the main Unconvention events on Saturday, many attendees like to relax with a meal out in the host city.

To this end we have pre-booked 70 reserved seats across four popular restaurants in the centre of Leeds, so that large groups of BookCrossers can eat together with minimal effort and fuss. Each of the restaurants has advised a maximum party size which will allow for decent levels of service and result in a successful social event.

To get ahead of the game you can now book yourself one (or more if you have family or friends to bring along) reserved place in the restaurant of your choice by heading to the shop. Although these reservations are free, don’t forget to check out your order to confirm your booking. Any places not reserved in advance will be available to sign up for during Friday and Saturday on a first come, first served basis.

The options for meals are French favourites at Cafe Rouge, classic Italian dishes from Zizzi, vegetarian Gujarati food from Hansa’s (10 seats only so get in quick), and an eclectic Italian/Indian/Thai/Chinese buffet at Spice Quarter.

BookBag Game

Following a successful debut last year, MissMarkey will be repeating the BookBag game this year, scheduled for 15:00 on Saturday afternoon.

If you would like to play The BookBag game please bring along the following :-

* A book in one of the following categories – Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Children’s, Murder/Mystery/Thriller, Historical, Popular Fiction.

*  2 items of BookCrossing supplies.

*  1 small wrapped mystery item that costs less than £1 (this item can be fun, frivolous, edible, practical, novelty etc).

We hope lots of people will want to join this game – it was extremely well received in Colchester, and even those not taking part won’t quickly forget the laughter that was overheard from the participants!

Owl Flashmob

For the last couple of years the Unconvention release walk has been a little different. Under the creative guidance of our entertainment coordinator MissMarkey the walk has incorporated a flashmob. In Nottingham we all wore silly hats before releasing the books we were reading, and in Colchester we created a book release ‘domino rally’. Those who were present will remember that while both were inventive and fun events they were slightly marred by over-zealous council workers collecting up our books as quickly as we could release them.

This year we come prepared and have agreed our mass release with the location where it will occur. The flashmob will again take place during the release walk on Sunday morning and will happen in The Trinity Shopping Centre, Leeds where we have permission for our Unconvention antics.

You will need a book to release and an owl of some description to leave in the Centre. This could be knitted, sewn, carved, cut out of a wildlife or garden magazine, hand drawn, painted, or anything else you can think of. It could be hung up, stood up, leant against something, on a stick ,handed out, or fly out! Use your imagination and surprise us! Just don’t forget your owls!!

The Unconvention Raffle

The Unconvention Quilt

The Unconvention Quilt

Those who have attended an Unconvention before will know that a very popular element of the weekend is the raffle.

For the third year running, the 2013 raffle will be running with themed prizes, where attendees can choose which prize(s) they will try to win with each individual ticket they purchase. Tickets will be on sale during the weekend for just 10p a ticket, or 50p per strip.

We have some amazing prizes lined up for this year’s raffle, themed around topics as diverse as Leeds, owls, crafting, BookCrossing, films, poverty, and Jasper Fforde. This year’s star prize has been created by our very own Ally1665, one of the committee local representatives from Leeds. Ally has been working slavishly since Leeds won the bid to host the Uncon, and has created a beautiful Uncon-themed quilt which could be yours for the price of a 10p raffle ticket. So the only question you need to ask yourself is ‘Do you feel lucky?’

For a little more information about some of the raffle prizes on offer visit our dedicated Raffle page.
