As an optional extra on Saturday we are offering you the opportunity of a guided tour of the Leeds Central Library. This will be a fascinating behind-the-scenes journey through this beautiful Grade II* listed building which was constructed between 1878 and 1884.

With the library situated just across the square from the Uncon venue and with the tour being offered for free this is an event not to miss! You will have two opportunities to visit the library at 11:30 and 14:00 on Saturday. If you would be interested in taking part please look out for the sign up sheets which will be available at Uncon during Friday evening and Saturday morning.

Call for Help

With a limited budget we always welcome offers of help from the BookCrossing community and this year, as in previous years, we are asking for your help with raffle prizes and items for goodie bags. Please Contact Us as detailed at the bottom of this post if you would like to provide any items.

Maybe you have an unwanted item at home that would make a great raffle prize (or partial prize). Perhaps you won something yourself that isn’t quite your ‘thing’. Or possibly you want to give a little love back to the Uncon attendees with a gift!

Alternatively you may be able to create items which we can add to goodie bags. These can be anything from a handmade bookmark to a handwritten postcard from your home town, to a homemade flapjack (as long as it will last!). There is absolutely no obligation to provide an item for every bag, but if you are a keen crafter this would be a really thoughtful and well appreciated outlet for your skills.

There are two ways to get your items to us:

1. Bring them along to Uncon. Goodie bag items will need to be with a member of the committee before registration opens on Friday evening. Ideally raffle prizes are needed at the same time, but at the latest will be needed by registration on Saturday morning.

2. Send your items to Maia (Mai-day) at the following address:

Maia Daguerre
Girlguiding North East England
7 Alpha Court
Monks Cross Drive
YO32 9WN

However you plan to get your items to us please Contact Us as soon as you know you are providing something with details of what/how many you would like to offer. It is important for us to know in advance what items we have to put in goodie bags and what prizes we have available for the raffle and it will help Maia to know what items to expect.

In advance, we thank you once again for the legendary BookCrosser generosity!

Visit the home of the Brontes

Haworth by Alison Christine on flickr

Early on Sunday afternoon, timed to coincide with the end of the main events, we have arranged an optional visit by coach to the nearby town of Haworth, home of the Bronte sisters.

For just £20 you will receive a return ticket on the BCUK Uncon coach to Haworth, a journey of approximately one hour. On arrival in Haworth you will be taken on a guided tour of the Bronte Parsonage including an excellent talk on the Bronte sisters which has been organised specifically for our group. This will last approximately 1.5 hours, with a small amount of free time in Haworth before the coach departs. The return coach journey will incorporate a drop-off at Leeds Bradford airport making this excellent value for money for those who are flying out from the Uncon.

If you would prefer free time in Haworth rather than an organised tour you can purchase a coach-only ticket for just £11.50.

To purchase your tickets on this exclusive tour please visit the Uncon shop.

Not So Secret

Unconvention is approaching fast and we are very excited to announce that you can now sign up for one of the traditional favourite features of the event.

Registration for the Not So Secret (NSS) gift giving is now available in the website shop. Signing up for this event identifies you as interested in giving a gift to another Uncon attendee (as well as receiving one yourself from someone else). The only rule is that your gift must contain at least one BookCrossing registered book and one other item. However you can go as wild as you like with your gifts personalising them for the person you have been allocated to buy for.

Once you’ve signed up for the event all you need to do is sit back and wait and vekiki, who has kindly volunteered to organise this year’s NSS, will be in touch after the closing date to let you know who to buy for.

Happy gift giving everyone!

And Now for Something Completely Different….

Alaric Hall

Alaric Hall

Our final confirmed author for this year’s Unconvention marks a change from the standard line-up of fiction authors.

Dr. Alaric Hall is a lecturer in medieval English literature at the University of Leeds with a great interest in English and Scandinavian medieval literature, history, and language and……. elves.

For the Unconvention Alaric will be talking about the links between Tolkien and Leeds and it promises to be a very entertaining presentation.

If you would like to find out more about Alaric and his work, visit the Alaric Hall page.

Tickets on Sale!

Tickets now on sale!

Tickets now on sale!

The committee are extremely excited to announce that tickets are now on sale for the 2013 Unconvention in Leeds! If you would like to purchase tickets then visit the newly opened Uncon shop.

The normal price for a ticket will be £20 but for the early birds, who purchase their tickets during May, you will get access to the whole weekend for the bargain price of just £15. This is excellent value for money as it includes entry to all author talks, bookswapping, book buffets, the release walk, and much more besides. You will also get a goodie bag, sure to be full of fun, a guide to the weekend, and a personalised name badge.

If you are making purchases for someone other than yourself, please use the Order Notes box at checkout to indicate their BookCrossing name(s) or real name(s) if they are not BookCrossers. This will help us to ensure that accurate information is included on the attendee list and that everyone attending can have a personalised badge and goodie bag.

Once your payment has been confirmed we will add your name (and the names of anyone else you have bought tickets for) to the list of confirmed attendees on the website. If your name has not appeared within a few days of completing payment then please Contact Us to check your payment has gone through OK.

Payments can be made via bank transfer, PayPal or cheque – all payment options are accessible via the shop. Keep an eye out for more items appearing in the shop soon including merchandise, entry to the gift swap, downloadable maps, and reservations for the Saturday evening meal.

We need your crafty owls to support this year’s (rather different) flashmob – more details on that to follow later.

To encourage as many owls as possible to come along to Uncon we are inviting you to enter our owl crafting competition, to win an exciting (although as yet undetermined, but it will be exciting!) prize.

If you would like to find out more then visit our Owl Competition page in the new Events section of the website.

Good luck!
